Installation Guide

Everything you need to know before wiring your WalTech Vision 2.0. Start here, then follow your brand-specific wiring guide.

Before You Start

Safety first. Always turn off power to your thermostat before starting any wiring work. If your RV is plugged into shore power, disconnect it. If you have a generator running, shut it off.

What You Need

  • A Phillips or flathead screwdriver
  • Your WalTech Vision 2.0 installation package (everything is included)

Estimated Time

About 30 minutes for most installations. If you're replacing a standard thermostat, the whole process is straightforward: remove the old unit, connect the wires, and mount the WalTech.

Tip: Take a photo of your existing thermostat wiring before you disconnect anything. It makes the process much easier if you need to reference it later.

How HVAC Systems Work

A thermostat is the control panel for your HVAC system. It sends signals to the HVAC controller (the brain inside your rooftop unit or furnace), telling it what to turn on and off.

What the Controller Connects To

The HVAC controller manages all of the climate hardware in your RV:

  • AC / Compressor Cools the air. Can be single-stage or two-stage.
  • Fan System Circulates air through the ducts. Multiple speed options on most units.
  • Heating Units Furnace, heat pump, or heat strip, depending on your setup.

Types of Wiring Connections

Different brands use different methods to communicate between the thermostat and controller. Here are the four types you'll encounter:

Direct Wire (Relay-Based)

Each wire controls a specific function (fan low, fan high, cool, heat, etc.). The thermostat acts as a set of switches.

Used by: Coleman Mach & Airxcel single-zone, most home thermostats

Single Communication Wire

Power, ground, and one data wire. The thermostat and controller exchange digital signals over that single wire.

Used by: Dometic & GE single-zone

Dual Communication Wires (RS-485)

Two data wires (A and B) carry balanced signals. This allows communication over longer runs with less interference, which is ideal for multi-zone setups.

Used by: Furrion single and multi-zone

Direct + Communication

A combination of relay wires for basic functions plus a signal wire for advanced features. Used in multi-zone setups where zones need to coordinate.

Used by: Coleman Mach / Airxcel multi-zone

Not sure which type you have? Check the Wiring Guides section below and pick your brand. Each guide shows exactly which wires go where.

Single Zone vs Multi-Zone

Single Zone

One thermostat controls one HVAC controller. This is the most common setup in RVs. One rooftop unit, one thermostat, one set of wires.

Multi-Zone

Up to 4 zones, each with its own HVAC controller, all interconnected. Larger RVs and fifth wheels often have 2 or 3 zones for separate climate control in the bedroom, living area, and basement.

Auto-detection: WalTech automatically detects the number of active zones during installation. You do not need to configure this manually.

What's in the Box

Your WalTech installation package includes everything you need for mounting and wiring. No extra trips to the hardware store.

WalTech Connection Points

The back of the WalTech Vision 2.0 has three connection areas. Which ones you use depends on your wiring type.

Location Connector Details
Left Side 8-pin connector Primary wiring connector used by most installations.
Right Side 8-pin connector Secondary connector for additional wiring needs.
Middle RJ11 port Used for Dometic multi-zone (CCC) installations only.

Push-and-Lock System

The 8-pin connectors use a push-and-lock mechanism. No crimping, no soldering, no special tools required.

  • 1 To insert a wire: Strip about 1/4 inch of insulation, then push the bare wire firmly into the pin slot until it clicks.
  • 2 To release a wire: Press the small white button next to the pin slot while pulling the wire out.
Tip: Give each wire a gentle tug after inserting it to make sure it's locked in place. A loose connection is the most common cause of issues after installation.

Choose Your Wiring Guide

Select the guide that matches your current thermostat or HVAC system. Each guide has step-by-step wiring instructions with diagrams.

Not sure which guide? Text a photo of your old thermostat to 1-844-WALTECH and we'll tell you exactly which guide to follow.
