Fan Control, Auto Mode & Dead Band

Configure fan speed, auto mode, dead band, and heat staging settings.

Fan Control

Fan Speed

The WalTech supports two fan speed settings:

  • Low - Quieter operation with lower airflow. Good for sleeping or when you want less noise.
  • High - Maximum airflow for faster cooling or heating.

Fan Mode

Fan mode controls when the fan runs:

  • Auto - The fan only runs when the AC or heat pump is actively ON. When the system is idle, the fan stops.
  • ON - The fan runs continuously, regardless of whether the AC or heat is running. Good for constant air circulation.
Note: Fan Auto mode only works in Cool Mode or Heat Pump Mode. In Furnace Mode, the fan will not auto-cycle because the furnace has its own built-in fan that runs independently.

Auto Mode

Auto Mode enables both Cool and Heat at the same time. The thermostat automatically switches between cooling and heating based on the current room temperature.

This is ideal for climates where temperatures swing between hot and cold throughout the day - like desert camping where days are scorching but nights get chilly.

Auto Mode works together with the Dead Band setting to prevent the system from rapidly switching between heating and cooling. See the section below for details.

Dead Band

Dead Band is the "no action zone" between heating and cooling when you are in Auto Mode. It prevents the heating and cooling systems from clashing with each other.

How Dead Band Works

Example: You set a target of 70F with a 2F dead band.

  • 68F to 72F - No action. The system does nothing in this range.
  • Above 74F - AC turns ON (72F dead band upper limit + 2F delay zone).
  • Below 66F - Heat turns ON (68F dead band lower limit - 2F delay zone).

You can adjust the dead band value in Settings > Differentials Settings.

Dead Band Between Heat-1 and Heat-2

If you have two heat sources (like a furnace and a heat pump), the WalTech uses a separate dead band to prevent both heaters from running at the same time.

Here is how it works: Heat-1 turns on first. If the temperature keeps dropping and does not recover, Heat-2 kicks in after the temperature falls below the dead band gap. This staged approach avoids overloading your electrical system.

You can adjust this in Settings > Differentials Settings > Between Heaters.

Heat Staging

The WalTech supports multiple heat stages. When the temperature drops, the system activates heaters in sequence rather than all at once:

  1. Heat-1 activates first - This is your primary heat source (usually furnace or heat pump).
  2. If temperature keeps dropping - Heat-2 kicks in after the dead band gap is crossed.

This staged approach is more energy efficient and prevents sudden high power draws that could trip breakers in your RV.

Heater Selection

The WalTech gives you control over which heat sources to use. You have three options:

  • Both Heat-1 and Heat-2 - Uses both heat sources with staged activation. Best for maximum heating power in very cold conditions.
  • Heat-1 only - Only uses your primary heater. Good when you want to conserve propane or electricity.
  • Heat-2 only - Only uses your secondary heater. Useful if your primary heater is being serviced or you prefer one source over the other.
